The purpose of this alphorn gathering will be to experience playing alphorns in a group setting in the Lake Tahoe area. There will be an emphasis on playing musically and listening to the group for cohesion and timbre. We will be practicing playing in the traditional way with no conductor as well as splitting into groups to play antiphonally.
You do not need to own an alphorn to participate in this event! There will be alphorns available for rental for a fee of $80.

Day 1
Thursday, October 3rd
We will meet up in The Village at the Palisades at 1:30 for some light alphorn playing and heavy conversation. We will then practice playing antiphonally on and off from about 2:00 until 4:30.
The Palisades (formerly Squaw valley) is a lovely ski resort on the northwest side of Tahoe. There are several shops and restaurants, and it is a 15 minute drive to Tahoe City where there is access to groceries and more shops/restaurants. We will finish up for the day at around 4:30.

Day 2
Friday, October 4th
Around 9:00am we will get loaded up into cars for a lakeside driving tour. We will stop at Inspiration Point in Emerald Bay for the scenic vista, and then continue on to the playing location. One group will play at Woods Lake and enjoy the wonderful acoustics, as well as a picnic in the beautiful picnic area at the lake. The other groups will hike a moderate 5 mile round trip to Winnemucca Lake to play at one of the best high alpine lakes in the area. Those groups will then return to Woods Lake to catch the tail end of the picnic. We will arrive at the locations at about 11:30 and remain until about 5:00, when we will pack back up and drive back to The Palisades.
Location: Carson Pass, Woods Lake and Winnemucca Lake
Day 3
Saturday, October 5th
There will be a large group playing session in the morning from 9:30am until 11:30am. We will break for lunch and meet again at 1:30 to get loaded up into cars for the drive to Donner Overlook. We will arrive at the location at about 2:30 and remain until about 5:00, when we will pack back up and drive to a location for dinner, before heading back to the Palisades. There is no shade at the overlook site, so be sure to protect yourself from the sun.
Location: Old Donner Pass Road, California
30 minutes from the Palisades
This location is found at the summit of Old Donner Pass Road. There is a short walk to one of the playing sites, requiring around a hundred feet of walking up a service road. The second location at this site is a further walk down through the abandoned train tunnels.
This scenic overlook of Donner Lake is enhanced by neighboring cliffs, giving a stunning vista and great acoustics. The playing location overlooks the Pacific Crest Trail where it follows an old series of railway tunnels high above the valley floor. The location is somewhat lumpy and uneven, making arranging a group of alphorn players a small challenge, but the beautiful vista and excellent echo make this worth the effort.
This year we are planning on splitting into two groups to play antiphonally from the overlook and the train tunnels.
Day 4
Sunday, October 6th
After breakfast we will meet in the morning at 10:00am for the gondola ride up to High Camp, where we will give a morning concert. We will play from 11:00am until 12:30pm, and then we will break for lunch from 12:30pm until 2:30pm.
In the afternoon we will load into cars around 2:30pm and drive about an hour to Camp Richardson in South Lake Tahoe where the group will give a concert as part of the Camp Richardson Oktoberfest.
